University Visits

It has been great to get the opportunity to meet with so many bright and enthusiastic future teachers around the state over the past couple of months. Since the first blog post we have addressed final year students at the Australian Catholic University, University of Technology Sydney, Charles Sturt University (Wagga Wagga campus),  University of Wollongong, and the Ourimbah, Callagahan and Port Macquarie campuses of the University of Newcastle. It's been good to know that so many final year education students have begun the process of applying for the Department of Education's Graduate Recruitment Program and have been asking lots of questions about the process; including the requirement to get a statement of eligibility from the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BoSTES), the procedures for the working with children check, interim casual approval and the best way to maximise the chances of being appointed to a permanent teacher position. We've also discussed how best to attain casual and temporary work and the conditions around employment. There's also been lots of questions about accreditation - please make sure you have the most up to date information on the procedures and requirements surrounding accreditation so you know what to do once you begin teaching. I know that lots of education students will also be undertaking professional experience this term. Be sure to check with your university and school all of the requirements you are expected to follow. If you are a student memebr of the Federation you can contact us to ask any of those questions you have about working or undertaking professional experience in NSW public schools. It's easy to begin to feel lost at the beginning of your career but please remember that you have a strong and experienced union behind you to help you traverse the teaching landscape.
